2017 swimming Tour Program

29/9/2016

Here are the details of Otter Aquatics 2017 European swimming tour program:

Trip #1. Saturday 5th August to Saturday 12th August 2017. Cycling and Swimming Tour of Lake Constance, starting and finishing in the Germany city of Konstanz and cycling along the northern coast of Lake Constance in Germany, the eastern coast in Austria and the southern coast in Switzerland with a decent swim every day. With a few changes, this will be a repeat of the 2016 trip.

Trip #2. Monday 14th to Sunday 20th August 2017, Swimming Slovenia’s Lakes and Rivers, starting and finishing in the Slovenian capital city, Ljubljana. This may well suit those who will have just competed in the World Masters Games in Budapest.

Trip #3. Wednesday 23rd August to Wednesday 30th August 2017. Italy's Lake Orta, starting and finishing at Milan's Malensa airport. This will be a repeat of the 2015 trip with very few changes.

All trips can be taken singly, or any two of them, or all three. For those who would like to do two or three, there will be time between each trip to travel to the next destination. For example, I intend to fly from Zürich (the closest airport to Konstanz) to Ljubljana after the Lake Constance trip but I plan to take a few days between the Slovenian trip and the Italian trip to allow travel by train between Ljubljana and Milan stopping off on the way in Venice and/or Verona (as one does!).

So start your planning and get the word out to your friends. Let me know if you are interested – no commitment yet of course. I will be asking for confirmation plus deposits late in 2016 or early in 2017.The sooner you book your flights, the better the fares. Updated information, including prices, as well as pictures and stories from the 2016 trips will be up on my website soon.

outback water safety training

26/9/2016

iI am currently in the Western Queensland town of Blackall running Bronze Medallion, First Aid and Pool Lifeguard training programs. There are people here from all across outback Queensland - including many towns that I have never heard of before. But they all have swimming pools (these days - not in the past), so they need trained staff to run them and to supervise their patrons.

The pool here is very good indeed. It gets it water from the Great Artesian Basin, which means that it comes out of the ground at 55 degrees C. They have to cool it down before it gets into the pool!

It has been quite an education for this city boy who has never been west of the Great Divide in Queensland before. Out here, there are many difficulties including poor mobile phone and internet coverage and a lack of facilities that we in the cities take for granted. Some of my students have driven for many hours on dusty roads to get here. But they are committed and desperate to receive their training. I will appreciate my post swim (in the sea!) coffee shop breaks much more when I get back.

Now that our Montenegro swimming tour is over, our European swimming touring season has come to an end. Both Montenegro and the week before's to Lake Constance were just fabulous. Now I am taking a bit of R&R elsewhere in Europe until I head off to Oz next week. Here is a shot of our contingent in Montenegro.

Come on an Otter Aquatics swimming holiday and you may get to wear an Olympic gold medal. This one really belongs to Dušan Mandić-Manda, a member of the gold medal winning Serbian water polo team at Rio and also the son of our boat driver on our Montenegro swimming holiday.
